68 SUNSET WAY

SEMI-DETACHED
COMPLETED 2014

This semi-detached home on Sunset Way presented a unique brief due to the client's passion for collecting cars, necessitating a spacious car porch capable of accommodating seven to eight cars. Alongside this requirement, environmental considerations and rising utility costs guided our design approach, inspiring us to create a home that addresses the local humid conditions effectively.

With three generations living together, our design aimed to balance private retreats with communal spaces that foster family interaction. The key architectural response was to incorporate passive cooling strategies, such as expansive overhangs and screens, to maintain a cool interior climate.

The ground floor features seamlessly connect the living and dining areas to the garden, promoting natural ventilation through open sliding doors. A double-volume dry kitchen enhances spatial openness and airflow, complemented by a cooling fountain at the staircase base and a skylight above, which illuminates and ventilates the upper levels.

Upstairs, a timber screen on the facade regulates bedroom temperatures, while the attic serves as a family area with a spacious balcony that encourages cross ventilation. This space also showcases the client's collection of car racing trophies and model cars, reflecting personal interests within the home's functional layout.

Special design elements include a discreet study hidden behind a flush timber wall in the master bedroom, providing a secluded workspace. Additionally, a one-tonne granite wall in the couple’s bathroom adds texture and complements the travertine surfaces, enhancing the tactile experience of the space.

Overall, this residence harmoniously blends practicality with innovative design solutions, catering to the unique lifestyle needs of a multi-generational family and an avid car collector. This home not only exemplifies functional elegance but also serves as a personalized sanctuary where modern living meets sustainable design principles.
